Canasta

Canasta is a rummy style card game, invented in Uruguay in the 1930s, suitable for 2-6 players per table playing as pairs. It is possible to play as individuals, but is best played with 4 people per table playing as two pairs. It uses two packs of playing cards with four jokers per table. There are many variations of the game, so the rules we use are based on the classic game.

You can read and download our rules for Canasta from here, and an A5 sized scoresheet from here, (Adobe Reader required, see panel, below right). It is very quick game to learn but intriguing to play. Incidentally, Canasta means basket in Spanish and refers to the ‘basket' that held the discards.

We have three Canasta groups, both use the same rules.

Canasta 1

Venue:

Circulates around Group members’ homes

Meeting Dates

 & Times:

1st and 3rd Wednesdays in the month

7.30pm - 10.30pm (approx)

Additional Charges:

None

Description: We are a very social Group, and take it in turn to host the evening, with nibbles being provided by the hosts, and everyone providing their choice of drinks. As some members are unable to host, being able to host is not a requirement to join the Group. We car share where possible to get to venues.

There is a waiting list to join the Group. We invite people on the waiting list to come along to our meetings if we know that there will be a place for them at a meeting.

ADOBE READER

To read the Canasta rules, you will

need to have Adobe Reader installed

on your computer, tablet, or smartphone.  Most of them have

Adobe Reader installed already.

If yours does not, you can download

and install Adobe Reader from here.

CANASTA

PLAYING CARDS

Canasta is played with ordinary playing cards. However, it is possible to buy

twin packs of cards that are specially suited to canasta as they have the canasta point values printed on the cards. They are also suitable for use as regular playing cards for all other card games such as Bridge, and Whist. They are obtainable from Amazon

and other retailers.
